Weekly Notices - 20 October 2024

It’s that time of the year when although Christmas is two months away, time seems to be speeding up. With this in mind we are busy planning for events that will happen in this last part of the year.

We want to alert you to the Memorial Service which is to be held on Wednesday, November 13, at 7 pm at St Columba’s. It is a time to remember those who have died not only in this past year but also those who we still hold dear in our hearts over many years. Please think about who you could invite along as we are keen to renew connections.

Have you had a chance to check out the new website yet and Facebook page too? Both are now up and running.

Looking at this week’s gospel reading: James and John behave like a couple of self-entitled yobs as if Jesus words of previous weeks have gone completely over their heads. When the other disciples catch up with what’s going down on social media they are none too pleased. We see their ambitions but need to ask what about ours. Jesus said of himself “the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve.”

Can we aspire to do less than this?

Les.

Today’s service

Sentence: For the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life a ransom for many (Mark 10:45)

Prayer of the day: Almighty God, you reign over all things and have created each one of us in your own image. Assist your people to give to earthly rulers and powers what belongs to them and to give our allegiance and ourselves to you alone, the one whose image is imprinted on every human soul. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God now and for ever. Amen

 Readings: Job 38:1-7, 34-41 & Mark 10:35-45

Prayer for the Regeneration of Our Diocese

As the kotuku gently rests upon the tree, come Holy Spirit and rest upon us as we pray for the regeneration of our Diocese.

Silence

Everliving God, through your Spirit you constantly renew the whole creation; bring regeneration to your Diocese of Christchurch, grant us courage to grow disciples of Jesus, give us vision to reach young people and their families, and strengthen us to create vibrant communities of faith. All this we ask in Jesus’ name. Amen
