Weekly Notices - 27 October 2024

What a great flurry of sporting activity there has been.

It seems we’ve been winning at almost everything. Women’s cricket, men’s cricket, “The Old Mug” as some affectionately refer to the America’s Cup and, canoeing, triathlon et cetera. There is also the possibility that Razor Robertson’s All Blacks might beat Japan!

While we rejoice in such events all these things are just transitory. What they will count for in eternal issues depends on the point of view taken.

I like what the prophet Isaiah wrote on permanence.

“A voice rings out: ‘Proclaim!’ Another asks, ‘what shall I proclaim?’ All flesh is grass, All its goodness like flowers of the field: Grass withers, flowers fade. When the breath of the Lord blows on them. Indeed, humanity is but grass: Grass withers, flowers fade…But the word of our God is always fulfilled!” Isaiah 40:6-8.

The blind man in this week’s gospel understood what many miss. That physical healing is only part of the deal, spiritual healing meant that he could also “Follow the Way.”

Les.

Today’s service

Sentence: When the Lord restored the fortunes of Zion, we were like those who dream. Then our mouth was filled with laughter, and tongue with shouts of joy (Psalm 126:1-2) Prayer of the day: God of love, your Son teaches us the heart of the law. Open our minds, souls and hearts to discern what you ask of us.  Empower us to love you with our whole being, to love our neighbour as ourselves and thus fulfil your law. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit one God now and for ever. Amen.

Readings: Job 42:1-6, 10-17 & Mark 10:46-52

God of mission, who alone brings growth to your Church, send your Holy Spirit to give vision to our planning, wisdom to our actions, joy to our worship, and power to our witness.  Help our parish churches to grow in numbers, in spiritual commitment to you, and in service to our local community.  Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
